I ALWAYS WANTED TO ASK IF YOU UNDERSTOOD JUST A LITTLE OF MY FEELINGS ALTHOUGH I NEVER TOLD YOU. | [attr="class","sorry"]It wasn't really hard to get the kitchen to feel pity for him. After all he knew everyone who worked in there like they were family at this point so whenever he said he was hungry they always had something to pass his way. The small sweetcake that they had managed to save for him from this mornings deserts that had been prepared for tonight's dinner lingered in his hand before he decided to take a small bite of it. It wasn't often that a candidate like him got to taste sweet things. But, one way or another he wouldn't be a candidate for long. Either he would end up aging out soon or this newest clutch would end up bearing fruit for him. Though not literally.
Setting the small cake to the side he picked up his tools once more and set to etching the design into the pair of hide gloves he had created. They were thicker than the normal fancy gloves that people wore in holds. Sturdier so that they would protect a rider's hands from both thread and between. His lack of a dragon impression had left him with a little too much free time and that time was being consumed with learning a trade skill that didn't involve moving dirt around for a living. Sure hidecraft wasn't the most glorious job but it was still important. After all how else would riders stay safe in dangerous times if not for the work of hidecrafters? |

"..." Hmph. Well this was a rather slow day, or at least that how Alyssa saw it. She'd been cooped up in her place within the Candidates' Barracks, not evening emerging to eat or stretch her legs. The very thought hadn't crossed her mind once until much later when she realized her head had gone groggy. Of course that could have also been from lack of sleep but she'd taken a nap just a short time earlier so the girl ruled out that possibility quick enough. But did she really want to go out? Well it wasn't like she was doing anything other than sketching out several anatomy structures and putting labels everywhere.
... Yeah it was better to just satisfy her greedy gut before it started growing a mind of its own. With a sigh the girl got up from her place, stretching as much as her stiff body would allow; before exiting the place. Kitchen, kitchen; where was the kitchen... Geeze, you'd think after spending around four years there she'd have finally memorized where everything was. Guess that just showed how much more effort she put into her past occupation rather than her current placement. Kind of sad really.
Finding her destination, Alyssa was greeted by one of the kitchen staff; a kindly older lady who often took pity on the aging girl. That or she really liked the eyepatch, it was pretty cool. Either way the two shared a few words and the lunch was nice enough to make her sandwich of sorts. Still the girl was grateful nonetheless. Having what she originally planned for, Alyssa aimed to just sit, eat, and leave. Until she spotted a familiar face, er- head. Roger? Rory? Oh geeze what was his name... Ah! Romeo! Who could forget a name like that..?
Treading carefully toward the slightly older boy, her sketchbook in one hand with the sandwich in the other; the girl found herself a seat right next to him. Book on her lap, the girl ever so casually leaned on the table's surface to stare at today's 'work of art'. "Looks like another beaut you got there-" She took a bite from her simple food, "You should make me a pair sometime. They'll be my little treasures to show off." A low-keyed chuckle left her as she waited for the boy's reaction. romeo

I ALWAYS WANTED TO ASK IF YOU UNDERSTOOD JUST A LITTLE OF MY FEELINGS ALTHOUGH I NEVER TOLD YOU. | [attr="class","sorry"]He wasn't expecting any sort of company but here it was. Glad that he had steady hands and wasn't too easily startled when it came to people approaching Romeo was glad that Alyssa coming up to him didn't cause him to ruin the gloves. He had a lot of requests from people to make them things and most of the time he obliged. After all it was better to practice as much as he could so that when he eventually lost out on becoming a dragon rider he would be able to do something useful instead. But he wasn't supposed to think like that. He was supposed to keep thinking positively.
"Hello Alyssa, is there any particular design you'd want on them? Whenever you impress you'll have to have a good pair for going between." He'd been here long enough that he knew the names and faces of most of the people living in the Weyr. Sure it had taken him a long time and sometimes he got a little mixed up but there was no one he didn't at least say hello to when he could help it. Some people said it made him too friendly and some people told him that wasn't the quality of a dragon rider.
But he couldn't change the way he was. After all he'd been searched as is and that meant that he was wanted by some dragon one day as is. "Have you been faring well today? I believe you've been working on something new haven't you?" |

"Y'know you could just call me Jack or Jackie." The girl grinned at the boy. Yup she knew him in more than just name, he was infamous for being the 'easy' kid in these parts. Though honestly, Alyssa wasn't one for picking on such easy targets. No, her sights were more on the 'big-shots', the idiots who thought they could get away with anything thanks to their families or 'precious abilities'. Hah! What a load of bull. Her grin remained as he accepted her request. "You put a lot of faith in me Romeo." she chuckled, "Since it'll be made by you I'll leave the design up to you. It'll remind me of who made it. Smart right?"
The topic of impress wasn't ever a good thing for the older generations, they were reaching the end of their hopes and dreams. In two years, if she hadn't a dragon by then; then she was left to go back home and follow in her father's steps. To live the life of a common woman, something that wasn't at all appealing to bull-headed nature. But she still had something to go back to, a backup plan; as for Romeo... well, she hadn't heard anything about him and he was a year older than her. He was good with leather so surely he would prized among the hide workers. It was an important job despite peoples' ideas.
The girl's smile finally disappeared at his next sentence. Alyssa let out a short hum, took a bite from her sandwich before giving the boy a worn-down shrug. "Been faring as good as I'll get." she answered simply, "But I did manage to work out some pretty interesting stuff." An excited glimmer shined in the girl's single eye as she brought her sketchpad to the surface. With one hand, she skillfully flipped through the pages until she found most recently used one. Turning the picture of her anatomy model over, the back revealed a grand onslaught of mathematical equations and several chains of elements. "A little something I've been using all this spare time for."
Alyssa doubted he understood what a single thing on that page meant but she still felt proud about it either way. Best to explain it. "Hypothetical equations on certain values to the human body. Put simply, its just a big fancy map that lets me figure out the precision of veins and the like. Odd I know." There was more but that required a much longer explanation and she wasn't really willing to put him through that torture. Instead she opted for the second route. "So? How 'bout you? Those gloves for you?" romeo
