She would rather be out in the weyr, watching the dragons coming in and out while drawing them on her small sketchpad, than be stuck in the kitchens where she's usually forced to go. She likes reading about the dragon riders of the past-- about the adventures they once went on and how they created history as she knows it today. However, she doesn't like herself. Katherine has issues with her outer appearance, believing she isn't good enough to ever have a dragon companion - or human, for that matter - come to her. She would easily give her life for a friend or even a random stranger, simply because she wants to do good and she doesn't matter if her own life is on the line. APPEARANCE Katherine is pretty average in appearance. She stands at about 5'5'', and weighs around 125 pounds. Her skin tone is light, but tans easily in the hotter months since she's outside whenever she can be. As most other Pernese, her hair is a dark brown with some deep red tint, but nothing too out of the ordinary. Her eyes are hazel, and sometimes seem more brown than green - or vise versa - depending on how the light hits them or what she's wearing. However, as she's now a Candidate, she's usually wearing simple clothing to help out with whatever chores the Candidatemaster has her doing around the weyr. |

HISTORY Born and raised within the weyr, Katherine has loved dragons all her life. Her parents weren't riders-- they were simple workers, her mother being a rather exceptional cook in the kitchens while her father was a fisherman. From a young age she was out and about within the weyr, watching the dragons fly above her head like a rainbow in motion, which often got her a good spanking or two from her mother when she wasn't paying attention to her chores. Life was alright. Simple, yes, but average. However, when she was about eight turns old, she and her father were out in their boat, and it capsized due to strong winds. Katherine could swim, but the coming storm that sank their boat proved to be too much of a fight, and her father drowned. How she survived, Katie doesn't know, but somehow she was swept ashore and found before she could die. Ever since her harrowing life-or-death experience, her mother won't speak to her. For some reason, she believes that Katie could have saved her father, which has sent the young girl into spiraling depression. While she no longer speaks to her mother, she generally keeps to herself, and has become selectively mute over time. Now she'd rather spend her time alone and exploring, getting herself into ridiculously dangerous situations than doing as she's told. The experience also seemed to awaken something strange within her-- as she can now somewhat understand whatever a dragon is 'saying' by simply touching them. It's a unique gift she hasn't showed to anyone, as she's afraid someone might ridicule her or say she's crazy. Just another reason to be a loner. Even after being Searched by a dragon and his rider, Katherine tries to get out and away from the people of the weyr as much as possible. She gets her chores done, but being around people who hate her because of something that was out of her control gives her anxiety. So she prefers to be alone. |
