hatching
Hatching dragons are pretty big deals here on Pern. Dragons are used to combat Thread, which is a parasitic mushroom spore from space that eats carbon. They do this by eating special rock that makes them breath fire. Fun, huh? Its all for the sake of keeping the people safe, I assure you. I know you probably don’t need to read another book on the subject but there are a few things to know if you’re not familiar or just need a refresher to the series, as well as a few general guidelines.
Each Candidate can stand on the Sands to Impress as many times as they like until they get a dragon. Doesn’t matter if they’ve had one or fifty different times under their belt. You can also have as many Candidates standing as you like at once, but usually you’ll only have one Impress, if any. After all, why would it be fair for one member to get six dragons and another get none? Dragons are picky creatures, and if you’re not right for them they won’t pick you. Simple as that. They would literally rather die than pick a Candidate that they don’t find perfect.
On Drop it!, Dragons choose their partners through a series of different criteria I’m sure most of you are more than familiar with. One is activity. A member who is rarely online and doesn’t post very much won’t be Impressing a Gold or Bronze, simple as that. Two is personality. Each dragon has its own unique personality that needs to match up, in some way, with the person who Impresses it. These things might not make sense to the people around them, but Dragons always know, even the Hatchlings. Three is the quality of your profile. A character you barely put any effort into, and the admins can see if you have or not, won’t be riding Bronze anytime soon.
A certain special rule is regarding Females on the Sands. On many Drop sites that this admin has seen, it always seems that when a Gold egg is on the sand, there is an influx of Female Candidates just to get that high position egg. However, after the egg hatches the female characters become inactive and end up just wasting space. If we find this being a problem, we will limit the number of females each member can have on the sand at once. That really limits things and makes things not fun, so let’s not be Queen Crowders here.
Very rarely, a Hatchling might not want to Impress Candidates at all and instead pick someone in the Stands. We can never guarantee a hatching, but these things certainly can’t be ruled out! Because of this, anyone who attends a hatching, even if not a Candidate, has a small chance to Impress! Granted, Candidates are MORE likely, but its still possible!
As one last thing, we here at Drop it! Can say that character sex, gender or sexuality won’t affect what you can and cannot Impress! Of course, this isn’t believed in RP, where things are believed to be very rigid and that Dragons work a certain way.
